PIVOT EAST 2019 FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

PIVOT East, a startups competition is  geared towards nurturing the growing Startups and SMEs in East Africa. This year the competition opened for both hardware and software startups; this has influenced greatly the types of startups that we will see pitch during the conference this year. A number of startups in the manufacturing, agricultural value added products and health hardware startups just to mention a few. Most of them are leveraging  technology in sectors that conventionally were not considered tech savvy or embracing.

This year, we received 248 applications into the competition. 128 of them met the criteria and where submitted to a panel of 30 judges who to judge them and get the semifinalists shortlisted. This year also saw the first Semi finalist from Burundi and highest number of applicants we have had from Tanzania and Rwanda.  The finalists consist of 25 startups from across the region and 5 in the waiting list .

TozzaPlus (Kenya)

TozzaPlus is a workforce management and payment system with mobile biometric Time Tracking, Payroll Management and automated salary payouts/payments to banks and mobile wallets. TozzaPlus plus also provides B2B salary financing to help enterprises pay their employees on time always.

SokoHela (Kenya)

SokoHela is an online short term working capital and financial literacy provider for micro and small enterprises in the urban agricultural value chain.

Engage & Prosper Africa (Kenya)

A Fintech startup that provides financial literacy to the bottom of the economic pyramid that is often left out by the conventional financial system.

A-Trader (Tanzania)

A-Trader is an AI-powered platform that enables users to access investment opportunities using any mobile device, and that also provides automated investment recommendations through a proprietary Robo-Advisor algorithm.

MOBISHULE(Kenya)

Mobishule is a Value Added Service proposition to parents of  partners’ schools that enables them to access small amounts of school fee cash advances using mobile.

Denkim Insurance is a Kenyan insurance aggregator that interconnects all insurance players in the insurance value chain by helping customers select, buy insurance products and experience quick claim settlement processes.

Savanna Circuit Technologies Ltd (Kenya)

MaziwaPlus Pre-Chiller, pioneering portable Solar powered chilling on transit systems that can be mounted on motorbikes, trucks etc with a Milk collection app for efficiency, accountability and maximize profits to dairy producers and cooperatives by cutting Milk post harvest losses at the farm gate, enhancing product traceability and quality control.

Toolboksi (Tanzania)

Toolboksi is a platform that solves & unemployment and poverty by increasing the access to job opportunities to the skilled workers (Blue-collar workers, handymen, repairmen) operating in the informal sector by connecting them with customers using inclusive technologies (Web/SMS/Apps/Call/Short-code)

ECO MAKAA  (Kenya)

‘Eco Makaa’ is an e-commerce company that connects local fuel briquette producers to a client base. These fuel briquettes are smokeless eco-friendly alternatives to wood charcoal

Kilimofresh Foods Africa Limited(Tanzania)

Kilimo Fresh runs a B2B E-commerce produce distribution platform focused connecting farmers with customers on a B2B model. Kilimo aggregates, trades and market all types of foods, grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables significantly reducing post-harvest losses by cold storage.

AfyaKit (Kenya)

We are a social venture start-up, focused on improving health outcomes by providing actionable in-facility data to health sector players across Sub Saharan Africa. They have  analytics tool that enables decision making for health managers.

Pivot East Finalists makes it to Semi-finals of VentureOut Challenge

Semifinalists for the VentureOut Internalization Challenge, have been announced. The mobile application internationalization contest challenge attracted 113 submissions from 19 countries, East Africa having 20 submissions – 13 from Kenya, 5 from Tanzania and 2 from Uganda.

 24 startups have been selected to the semifinals out of which 12 finalists will be selected. The startups will go through a mentorship program and use the feedback from the VentureOut judges and their mentors to upgrade their applications by September 24th for another round of judging. The top 12 finalists will be announced on October 2nd.The finalists will compete for $10,000 in seed funding in the Dragon’s Den in Chisinau, Moldova during an international mobile meeting organized by infoDev of the World Bank on 30th – 1st November

 Three Pivot East 2013 finalists made it to the semifinals of the VentureOut challenge. The startups include;

 brainshareBrainshare is an academic application that enables students to easily access ebooks, notes and past papers to help them revise and get ready for exams. BrainShare addresses the problem of poor content access by students in Ugandan schools. This is done by ensuring that notes, past papers and ebooks can be supplied to students easily and also enable student collaboration. Ma3Route 2 LogoMa3route is a mobile/web/SMS platform that crowd-sources for transport data and provides users with updates on traffic, directions and driving reports. Ma3Route has hit the streets by a storm with over 5,800 followers on Twitter, more than 25,000 posts on the platform, 1,500+ downloads from the Google Play Store, and 6.5+ million serviced requests. Ma3route was one of the winners of Pivot East 2013 in the utility category. JooistJooist is a social gaming network for mobile phones. It enables users to discover, play and share high quality mobile game apps in low to medium end devices. Their revenue model is mostly ad-funded but they have a paid component to it for premium titles. Jooist has strategic partnerships with three of the largest device manufacturers that they use to distribute and monetize the apps via white-label offerings.  Waabeh is Africa’s audio marketplace [Music & online-radio]  solving the problem of Discovery, Discovery and Distribution of Audio Content  from the continent. Currently Waabeh is available on the Web, and as native apps for Android and Windows 8, all with delightful and easy to use design that takes the headache out of discovering new as well as vintage African sounds and puts the focus back on what is important; hearing what you love.

Xcommodity is an online commodities market and auction house. It has been designed to complement and enhance the movement of commodities across continents and balance global supply and demand for raw materials with the goals and needs of developing economies.

VentureOut Challenge is an initiative of infoDev  and CRDF Global to propel expansion-ready mobile entrepreneurs into enticing international markets. The program runs from August to November 2013 and helps hundreds of entrepreneurs through hands-on training, virtual learning opportunities, mentorship, international exposure, and seed funding.
